charlie! the newest little puppy dog apple of my eye

this little babe is officially, officially mine!  meeeeet Charlie. he doesn't actually realize that this is his name yet, but oooh his 8 week puppy self will soon!  and i think once he does, he will be pretty happy with it. i don’t even really know where to start a story like this, there are about a billion things to it.

i love Portuguese water dogs. mainly because we grew up with one. and maaaybe also because they don't shed.  so on and off  for a couple of years i have been contacting Portuguese water dog breeders.  Mostly during the off-season when i would have austin home to help me with puppy craziness. and because his voice is so deep and perfect for saying  "no bite!" and other things of that nature.   But each time, it just  never seemed to work out. mainly because all breeders and their litters were just too far away for me to visit. and i really knew deep down, that i needed to visit in order to be absolutely certain.

this past April  my family and i had to say goodbye to our sweet love Duncan after 14 years, blah. that just made my heart want a new mini Duncan more so than ever. aaand then. then came summer and a trip to my family's beach house where i met my cousins  Portuguese water dog. sooo it was just all over for me. i needed one and my puppy search went from pause to play once again.

it’s a rare breed this kind, and i was a bit particular of coat and color because Duncan was just the cutest little four legged thing! so i called and email different breeders from past and present and kept it all documented in my puppy excel spreadsheet. because im a little intense like that... i suppose. i prefer "organized."  so my name. it was definitely out there. one afternoon in September Austin and i were at chilli festival when we spotted a Portuguese water dog. i ran over to him and his human owner and after chatting for a little, she said waaaait a minute,  are you the girl in buckhead with the baseball boyfriend? weeeell, yes. yes i am.

that was actually the day i got an email from charlies breeder's friend (did you follow that) about a new litter located in Durham, NC. the timing was pretty perfect.

last weekend austin and i took a secret little trip to Durham to visit the litter. just a 16 hour total road trip in less than 24 hours. but i  knew i had to, had to, had to meet the puppies in person. and once i did. it felt right.  i really recommend sitting in a little fenced play area with 10 baby puppies. you will feel like the most loved person. ever. so charlie, austin and i had some alone time and we decided, we all liked each other.

so when this past Sunday rolled around - we were back in the car and headed to bring the pup home for good! everything is a story you know. even the drive there. i was so nervous and scared of the unknown but anxious and excited and before i knew it i was tearing up.  it was just too many emotions for a girl like me to experience in such a long car ride. but once we were all together and driving home, a huge sense of relief and calmness took over. it felt good. and once charlie is done missing his brothers and sisters and i can sleep a little bit more, oooh it will feel even better

SWEET BABY!!!! I know how much your heart is bursting right now. We just adopted our very own puppy baby (after losing my childhood dog over the summer) and it's the best kind of love there is. He's pretty much the center of my world and I'm obsessed. Can't wait to watch Charlie grow!

Aww, so happy for you!!! I had a black cocker spaniel growing up that passed away when I was 20. When I finally had a house of my own, I searched & searched, just like you, to find the perfect cocker spaniel. I found one in Monroe, NC that I swear has to be the great grand doggy of the pup I had growing up. Aren't they just so awesome??
